A recently-launched cabin wellbeing platform has teamed up with a non-profit mental health and suicide prevention organisation to boost support for working flight attendants.

The Crew Collective launched in September, establishing a global community and support network for flight attendants feeling the pressure of the pandemic and the stresses of the job.

The platform has now linked up with We are Hummingbird to boost the level of support it can offer its members.

“It’s fantastic to see so many fellow flight attendants returning to the skies following such a tough year, but now more than ever our community needs support. There are so many new challenges within the role such as PPE requirements, hotel isolation and quarantine which can contribute to feeling stressed and lonely,” said Rebecca Spinks, who co-founded The Crew Collective alongside colleague and fellow private flight attendant Emily Webb.

A survey of 2,000 cabin crew conducted following the initial outbreak of COVID-19 found that flight attendants also feel that they are under immense pressure and stress. In fact, 98 percent of crew surveyed in March 2020 feared that they would lose their jobs at the time. And 94 percent said they feared that they might fall sick if they continued to fly. At the time, 54 percent were facing social isolation, mostly from friends.

Ian Hurst from We are Hummingbird said: “Our mission is to ensure the distance between being alone and having a person to talk to is as short as physically possible and to create a global community where people can achieve the strength and confidence they need to communicate openly.”

Together, We are Hummingbird and The Crew Collective will aim to educate flight attendants with jargon-free, easy-to-digest webinars, chats, aviation-specific workbooks and access to courses which will provide essential hints, tips and ideas to support good mental health.

Webb said: “We are honoured to be working with We are Hummingbird to offer the flight attendant community an array of free wellbeing resources to support mental health. Our aim is to help individuals to recognise and understand that mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing and maintaining both is vital to staying fit and healthy.”
